Brendan Storey
Social Worker & FounderI have a passion for working with people who have the invaluable experiences, insights, stories, and perspectives that come with 60+ years of life. I also strongly believe that mental health support cannot be optimized until a persons basic needs in accessible housing, income, nutrition, and care are met. This is why in addition to therapeutic services, I offer consultation and advocacy to seniors and their support networks in navigating public and private community, health care and financial systems.
I have a diverse professional background with experience in community, clinical, hospital, and long term care social work in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. In addition to my private counselling practice in Moncton, New Brunswick, I work with the Horizon Health Network at Moncton Hospital Supporting Patients with Neurodegenerative Disease. I work with adults both directly and indirectly experiencing the unique challenges of aging. My client base also includes family members, friends, and caregivers navigating the complexity of supporting loved ones. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of my clients' journey and profoundly appreciate the courage it takes to share both the extraordinary and painful experiences in counselling. I have grieved with families and celebrated life, supported clients through changing ability and followed them towards a discovery of resilience. With a growing gap in access to mental health services for those with limited mobility, transportation and support, through Thrive Atlantic Counselling, I am passionate about providing services to clients in the comfort, safety, and convenience of their own homes. |
Qualifications & experience |
I hold a Master’s of Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from St Thomas University, and am registered in good standing with the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers
I have over 10 years of experience supporting Canadian communities to navigate challenges in; accessibility, physical health, mental health, financial barriers, exclusion and isolation and have a passion for supporting the welfare and personal goals of individuals aging into their 60's and beyond. |
THERAPEUTIC APPROACH |
I have a fondness for the concepts, skills and toolset that comes with Narrative Therapy, a well-documented approach for supporting senior adult communities, and draw from other evidenced-based approaches including Strengths Based Therapy, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Solution Focused Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
With a range of therapeutic tools, I support individuals in exploring thoughts, feelings, behaviours and experiences. Together, we navigate the emotional barriers or beliefs that clients feel cause distress or dysfunction in their lives. We examine and work through interruptions in their ability to heal, move forward, and participate in their daily life in a fulfilling way. |
